Full Description
Evaluation in advance of proposed development in 2000 recorded a spread of prehistoric material partially sealing a relict river channel. The prehistoric material appears to be represented by burnt flints and charcoal, which sealed the ancient river channel. The ancient river channel is characterised as a wide channel which may have been a "minor tributary of the Great Stour, extending from the vicinity of Chartham Hatch to the main river" (from the original report, 1). Deposits within the layers of the ancient river channel appera to have preserved wood in anaerobic waterlogged conditions - suggesting that exceptionally preserved artefacts may be found within the channel.
Residual medieval pottery was also identified at the site, alongside two post pits with the posts preserved within them - however, these do not appear to have been listed as archaeologically significant in the report, so are presumably modern in date. (1)
