Full Description
This building is of Early/Mid-Saxon date (5th-7th centuries AD). It had suffered complete truncation on its southern side, but presumably was originally sub-rectangular in plan with two axial post holes situated centrally at either end of its long axis. The structure was 3m in length with a maximum surviving breadth of 1.92m and depth of 0.17m. It was orientated roughly north-west – south-east, and its sides had a moderate concave slope with an irregular base. Despite being heavily truncated, a number of finds were retrieved. These included 75 fragments of animal bone (771g), five fragments of Romano-British CBM (421g), 10 sherds of pottery (61g), and fragments of lava quernstone, some it from the north-western post hole.
