Full Description
Possible former site of a moated stone house apparently built by Geoffrey Lowther c.1430; it was sold by his brother Robert in 1448, at which point it was described as ‘all that his manor or tenement called the Moat in the parish of St Martin’s near Canterbury’, as Sparks shows (1). It has been suggested that this manor was located close to where the Canterbury/Sandwich road crosses the Lampen stream (2): this proposal is based on documentary evidence including Canterbury Cathedral Archives Map 49 (c.1560): Estate Map: Map of Barton farm, St Paul's, Canterbury, showing St Augustine's abbey, the deer park, the Sandwich and Dover Roads, St Paul's and St Lawrence's hospital, which clearly shows a moated manor with a gatehouse in this vicinity.
