Full Description
Fossiliferous brickearth at various Folkestone sites, mostly to NW of old town centre and in vicinity of "Central Station", generally exposed and investigated at brick-pits and brickfields in mid-late 19th C. There are a few separate site-specific records, but most details are more general. Early reports by Mackie (1) and Topley (2) list mammals found as aurochs (Bos primigenius/urus), red deer (Cervus elaphus) and horse; and molluscan fauna including Helix, Succinea oblonga and Pupa. A well-preserved bone of Bos primigenius was found in an unspecifically-located pit belonging to Mr Kingsnorth of Broadmead (3), which may equate with KHCP4_M_08. Smart et al (3) list some brickearth workings, at NGRs 621780 135650, 621890 136000, and 622010 136490.
