Full Description
Archaeological excavation carried out in 2015 found evidence of 1st to 3rd century Roman occupation. An artificial platform consisting mostly of pottery, brick and tile was built in the 1st century to support a building comprising a clay floor and occupation debris. Later in the century the floor was raised again and a metalled surface laid, perhaps as a yard of a nearby building. A final phase of activity from the early/mid 2nd century to the mid 3rd century saw a sequence of clay floor and occupation deposits, almost certainly within a room in a building. The building was evantually abandoned and a small number of features were excavated including a cess pit of 3rd/4th century date.
The remains were accompanied by a full range of domestic debris and finds including pottery, brick, tile, charcoal, shell and animal bone, daub, cereals, charred animal bedding, copper alloy fragments and iron nails.(1)
