Full Description

A fairly large medieval midden deposit was discovered on land off Craythorne Lane, New Romney, during investigations undertaken there in 2008. the midden seals earlier medieval layers and contained material datable to the early/mid 14th century.

It overlay a thin layer of fine silty sand which marks a short period of disuse at the site and extended over most of the site. It represents a 25 to 50 year period of time when the area was used for the dumping of local refuse. It comprised a firm mid-to-dark brown sandy silt with common rounded pebbles, charcoal flecks and occasional oyster shell. During the excavation it yielded 221 potsherds (1300/25-1350), 29 animal bone fragments, 57 oyster shell fragments, 18 potentially worked stones, 26 pieces of iron, 1 glass fragment and 4 pieces of fired clay. Several fish hooks and fragments of West Country roofing slate were also recovered. This artefact-rich midden layer provides demonstrable evidence that the site was used extensively for the dumping of local refuse between 1300/1325 and 1350.
