Full Description

'Ad Astra' was built and operated by Mr. E.W. Cooper, member of the British Astronomical Association. In addition to his observatory, Mr. Cooper set up a meteorological station in 1946 and provided monthly weather summaries and astronomical and paleontological information to the local weekly, Sheerness Times & Guardian (STG), for a number of years for residents' benefit. Drawing on STG reports, 'Ad Astra' was frequented by residents and visitors and played an important role in Sheppey's astronomical and meteorological history.

'Ad Astra' was marked on an OS map TR0172 levelled in 1951, revised in 1964.

The site of the observatory is just visible on 1946 aerial photographs, but by 1990 it appears to have been lost to coastal erosion.
