Full Description
Wooden stakes and revetment boards were excavated in slot, located in the south-west of Area B. Here pieces of preserved timber were fashioned to reinforce a potential edge of the channel, by means of stakes driven into the silt and horizontal boards placed between them; a pattern that was replicated further north in revetments alongside the masonry building. The timber revetment appears to have been fixed together by pushing the stakes into the soft ground and then wedging boards firmly between them. A large number of loose nails were recovered within a fill against the channel edge. These nails, although none were found fixed to any of the timbers, may suggest that nails were in fact also used in the construction. Two phases (A and B) of a revetment that would have been adjacent to the edge of a watercourse were found 15 timbers from phase B were lifted from
channel fill in the north-west of Area B, a post-storm deposit. The timbers that provided successful tree-ring data indicated that this revetment predates the 1287 storm, while fill demonstrates subsequent infill caused by the storm. Nine timbers associated with the revetment were lifted. All were piles or boards and all were deciduous oak (Quercus sp.), with the exception of timber and which were ash (Fraxinus excelsior).
