Full Description
Archaeological investigation ahead of development of a plot along Church Road, New Romney revealed the partial plan of a probable rectangular shaped timber framed building with a medieval date and two main phases. The structure was set on a long north-west by south east axis measuring a minimum of 9m in length and in excess of 3m in width with internal clay floors and possible beam slots.
The first phase was represented by a U shaped beam slot and at least two thin clay floors with traces of occupation deposits. The phase two building was situated in the same position as phase 1 and was of the same minimum dimensions is again represented by a U shaped beam slot and further clay floorlayers and occupation deposits. The building appears to have been destroyed and the site cleared of super structural debris, which then becomes covered by a substantial deposit of mixed yellow course sand and beach pebbles.
