Full Description

Archaeological investigation ahead of development of a plot along Church Road, New Romney, revealed the remains of a large masonry building which occupied the site in the later medieval period. The building was located towards the north western limits of the site, to the north east of the earlier timber framed building which was also uncovered at this location. It was probably rectangular in shape with at least two, possibly three phases, with stone built walls. It was set on a long north-east by south-west axis measuring a minimum of 11.1m in length and in excess of 4.5m in width. Within the building there were a series of clay floors. The phase 1 remains comprise partial remains of a substantial masonry wall and associated robber trenches, evidence from these trecnches suggests that the building may have had a peg tile roof. A clay floor was also exposed for this phase. Phase 2 includes substantial alterations to the first phase structure comrpising demolition of the south west wall and construction of a new cross wall. Clay floors were also associated with this phase. Slate was discovered alongside the deposits associated with this phase suggesting that the building may have also had a partially slate roof. It seems likley that the building is of a later medieval date. Fills of a pit within the structure contained material datable to 1475-1500 though its use likley pre dates this material. The final demis of the building is represented by a inundation of marine material and the site is then covered by a sequence of dump deposits, perhaps to level the site (1) (information summarised from sources)
