A series of dark sand layers containing occupational material of a medieval date were uncovered in 4 of 6 trenches (3, 4, 5 and 6) during an archaeological evaluation carried out at the former site of Southlands School, New Romney, Kent. These overlay a storm deposits which was seen across all trenches. The material comprised bone fragments, shells and pottery. These layers, which collectively were up to 1m thick, were more prevalent in the north west of the site being partly formed by gradual deposition from the top of the bank of storm sand. These deposits represent a series of activity deposits possibly associated with the beaching of ships and their cargos. The activity layers were sealed by garden soil, concrete and tarmac.
