Full Description
Three fire sites were encountered during evaluation trenching off Fairfield Road in New Romney. The features are of a likely medieval date.
Two of the fire sites were located in trench 1 and one was in trench 3 present on the surface of the
storm sand indicating that such activity took place before any soil formation took place after the storm sand bank was created. The example in trench 3 incorporated a charred timber and baked floor structure, and Context 57/58 adjacent to the north may represent either a kiln or oven and associated flue chamber. Whether such activity was domestic or small-scale industrial in nature cannot
be ascertained on the available evidence. (1) (information summarised from source)
