Full Description
Medieval walls were encountered in two trenches during evaluation trenching undertaken ahead of development at Fairfield Road, New Romney. It is likley that these relate to the former site of buildings.
The narrow wall within Trench 1 was constructed on medieval topsoil containing mid 14th- to 15th-century pottery and may be taken as evidence of more permanent structures being built by this time. A second structure within Trench 2 is difficult to date, but also appears to have been constructed after the formation of medieval topsoil which contained mid 13th- to early 14th-century pottery and potentially later medieval in date. The re-used Caen stone corbel is likely to have been obtained from a structure local to the site. (1) (information summarised from source)
