The partial remains of a minimum of ten structures were revealed in section during a watching brief which was carried out ahead of the redevelopment of a site at the junction of Spitalfield Lane and Sussex Road in New Romney, Kent. Structure 'H' appeared to belong to the fourth phase of construction at the site (A.D. 1400-1475). It was probably rectangular in plan, measuring at least 9m NE/SW and 4.5m (possibly wider to the south) NW/SE with a possible entrance porch or wing (minimum 1.2m square) on the south east side. It was positioned within house plot A (now Elsworthy) close to the road. The structural elements revealed comprised a clay floor to the main structure and SE wing, three beam slots suggesting limits of part of the north eastern end of the structure, two post holes in extension wing. Dump abandonment deposit over the floor contained crushed mortar, broken roof slates and a piece of late Medieval floor tile. (information summarised from source) (1)
