The partial remains of a minimum of ten structures were revealed in section during a watching brief which was carried out ahead of the redevelopment of a site at the junction of Spitalfield Lane and Sussex Road in New Romney, Kent. Structure 'J' appeared to belong to the sixth phase of construction at the site (A.D. 1550-1650). It was probably rectangular in plan, measuring at least 2m NE/SW (probably around 9m) and 4.5m (probably wider to the south and with possible wings) NW/SE. It was positioned within house plot B (now Rosewood) close to the road. The structural elements revealed comprised a clay floor, two masonry dwarf wall footings within a wall trench, three possible stake holes, abandonment/dump deposits over the floor which contained ragstone lumps, clay roof peg tiles and broken roof slates.
