Important evidence for medieval copper/bronze working was identified during an archaeological watching brief on boreholes and test pits on land at Craythornes, New Romney. The evidence comprised small fragments of copper/bronze working waste together with a small quantity of hammerscale and a few fragments of distinctive red slag-type material. This was mostly recovered from along the western boundary of the site and almost certainly relates to similar material identified during trenching undertaken as part of the New Romney and Greatstone First Time Sewerage Scheme in 2006 (Holman 2009, 46) which identified medieval pits, postholes and ditches beneath what is now Craythorne Lane. Small quantities ofnon-ferrous (probably copper/bronze) slag were identified within soil layers in this area. (1) (information summarised from source)
