Evidence of a major scheme of construction/demolition at St Nicholas' Church, New Romney was found during a watching brief at the church carried out in 2011. The evidence comprised a sequence of building debris interspersed with lenses of sandy silt. This material seems to have been dumped during a major phase of modification to the earlier church that must have occurred prior to the expansion of the north aisle as its foundation trenches had been cut into the sequence. Abutting the plaster face of the earlier boundary wall foundation and the lower plaster face of the tower north aisle its matrix consisted of broken roofing slates, a roofing material popular in New Romney before the advent of peg tiles in the twelfth-century, and tooled Caen stone fragments. The majority of the masonry rubble came from a demolished structure as some pieces retained rough facing covered in whitewashed fine lime plaster. Clearly derived from a major scheme of refurbishment, it is suggested to have been associated with the remodeling and enlargement of the east end in the early fourteenth century.
