Full Description
The third barrow discovered at the Thanet Earth excavations was situated on a fairly gentle south facing slope and at about 31.5mOD. It consisted of a single circular ring ditch about 19m in diameter. A single grave was located just to the south-east of the centre of the ring ditch and three un-urned cremations formed satellite burials. Disarticualted remains representing another burial was also discovered in the primary fills of the ring ditch.
The ditch had an average width of 2.2m at the top and 0.9m at the base, with a mean depth of 1.5m. Aside from the disarticulated skeleton, the lower fills of the ditch contained few finds. Over the secondary fills was a deposit of charcoal rich black, grey and brown ashy clay silt. Up to 0.4m thick, the layer was restricted to the southern part of the ditch for a length of approximately 7m. A relatively large assemblage of prehistoric pottery with animal bone, burnt flint, burnt clay and seashell, were retrieved from the deposit. Like Barrow 2, this may presenet a renewed phase of use of the barrow for ritual activity. The grave near the centre of the ring ditch contained the badly decayed skeletal remains of an adult inhumation lying flexed on its base. Only the legs survived but from this it is postulated that the head would have been located at the north-western end. The skeletal remains were radiocarbon dated to 1873–1687 cal BC. Two of the cremations were located on the north-western side, just external to the ditch, whilst the third was situated on the eastern side, cutting its outer edge. No pottery or finds were found in association with these burials. There was no clear indication of an external bank in the ditch. (information summarised from source) (1)
A ring ditch of Bronze Age date was visible as a cropmark in Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 14-AUG-2003. This feature was mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (2)
