Monument record TR 26 NE 1283 - Middle Bronze Age inhumation burials - Plateau 1, Thanet Earth

Summary

Two adjacent inhumation burials were aligned with but cut the terminus of one of the field system ditches. Both of the graves contained poorly preserved human remains, one was an adolescent female the other a male aged 25-30. The female was dated to 1498–1401 cal BC and it seems likely that both graves are contemporary with each other and the field system with which they are aligned and associated. Full Description

Two adjacent inhumation burials were aligned with but cut the terminus of one of the field system ditches. Both of the graves contained poorly preserved human remains and were on a similar alignment. Of the two graves, S1567 to the east was sub-rectangular, 0.96m long, 0.49m wide and 0.1m deep . It was aligned north-west to south-east on its longitudinal axis. The cut had steeply inclined sides and a flat base and contained a single, articulated inhumation of an adolescent female (14–18 years old) lying crouched on the base of the grave, facing south with the head at the north-west end. Bone survival was limited, with mainly the limb bones and partial skull surviving. The skeleton produced a radiocarbon date of 1498–1401 cal BC (at 95 per cent probability). The skeleton was so tightly crouched that there is the suggestion that the body would have been bound. Grave S1597 was also sub-rectangular, 0.9m long, 0.56m wide and 0.08m deep. It was aligned north-west to south-east on its longitudinal axis. The cut had steeply inclined sides and a flat base. Also heavily truncated, preservation of the skeleton was very poor. The cut contained a single, articulated adult inhumation of a male aged 24–30 years lying crouched in the grave, facing south with the head at the north-west end. It was also tightly crouched and may have been bound. The similar alignment of, and fills within each grave implied that each burial occurred within a relatively short period of time, with the added significance of having been buried cutting a boundary ditch. Their alignment suggests that this ditch was still visible at the time of interment. (information summarised from source)
