Full Description
Military airfield established in October 1916 and used by 50 Sqdn (who also operated out of a landing ground at Throwley near Teynham) as a Home Defence landing ground. In 1918 the airfield was used by 143 Sqdn flying Sopwith Camels and later, Sopwith Snipes. 143 Sqdn left Allhallows in late summer of 1919.
The airfield orignally consisted of a grass field for take-off and landing and a few tents. The first buildings were constructed in 1917 on the eastern side of the airfield. RAF Allhallows (as it by now known) was mothballed but retained in RAF ownership. In 1935 it was briefly used as a stopover for a Southend to Rochester air service operated by Short Bros (on behalf of Southend-On-Sea Air Services Ltd). After one year the service was withdrawn though.
At the beginning of the Second World War the site was identifed as an advanced landing ground. On 1st December 1943 a US B-17 heavy bomber, serial number 42-39808, code letters GD-F, from the 534th Bomb Squadron of the 381st Bombardment Group successfully crash landed at the airfield. All 10 crew members survived and the aircraft was later recovered by the USAAF. In 2019, the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust erected a memorial to the former RAF station, in the car park of the Village Hall. No traces of the site survive but the badge of the local Primary School features a Sopwith Camel as part of its design. (1, 2)
