Full Description
Excavations over several years have revealed truncated pleistocene deposits and palaeolithic artefacts at Maypole Primary School.
The 2013/14 excavations concluded that immedaitely below the topsoil there was a layer of fine-grained and variable silty-clay overlying coarser sand. This was believed to be correlated with Wenban-Smith's Unit III, the Clay, Silt with Gravel Patches. In much of the site this sits at 60 cm deep and generallly covered by 2cm gravel in addition to topsoil. In the area of the buildings, however, this seems to have been truncated by terracing. (1)
