Full Description

Post-Roman plough soil was identified from an archaeological evaluation and an archaeological watching brief at Braymor House, Queens Avenue, Canterbury. The evaluation and watching brief were undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2017 in advance of the construction of 4 semi-detached residential buildings at the site. Roman (and possible late Iron Age) features and artefacts were also recovered from the site (TR 15 NW 2595).

The possible deposit of plough soil was up to 0.30m in depth and is described as "moderate yellow brown silty clay" (from the original report (1). It is listed as 'post-medieval', however, the date is uncertain and it has been provisionally dated to between the medieval - post-medieval periods due to a comparison with other local sites - "Similar deposits have been recorded sealing the brickearth on other sites in this area, for example at 3 Queens Avenue where the deposit was suggested to be late medieval (from original report (1))".

No finds were recovered from the layer. The presence of post-Roman and post-medieval features at the site, including the plough soil and field boundary ditches, suggests that the land had a primarily agricultural function after the Roman occupation. One pit feature dating from the post-medieval period may also represent quarrying at the site. (1)
