Full Description
The phase 2 evaluation of Canterbury Cathedral Welcome Centre was undertaken following a previous evaluation comprising 9 pits. The evaluation took place to the SW side of the cathedral's South precinct, in advance of the creation of a new welcome centre for the cathedral. This evaluation consisted of one pit split into three subsections. The excavated features included walls thought to have been associated with the 1809 Proctor's Office basement and walls associated with a possible cellar. No finds were recovered from the excavations.(1)
The basement walls (located in pit 10b) comprised two main walls forming the eastern basement wall and an internal dividing wall which was aligned NW-SE. The walls were constructed of red brick, each 0.06-0.07m in thickness. The walls were bonded with mortar. An opening/recess was present between the two walls measuring around 0.50m wide. A lintel was added at a later date between the two walls this was constructed from red brick and brick fragments and measured 0.20m tall. (1)
Later wall features possibly pertaining to a cellar, alongside more brickwork, were excavated in the area around the original basement walls. Some of the brickwork appears to form a division within the aforementioned recess. The brickwork and associated recess may have provided an opening to a basement towards the east.(1)
The only other features of interest were further brick wall features relating to an unidentified structure (also identified in the earlier evaluation of the site), and intact horizons identified in pit 10c, suggesting that if deeper excavation were to occur in this area, archaeology from medieval and pre-medieval levels is likely to be uncovered.
