Full Description
The archaeological evaluation at HM Prison, Longport comprised the excavation of 6 evaluation trenches (3-8) within and around the extant prison wall. The evaluation was undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust as a result of proposals for development at the site. Other finds and features include Iron Age pottery, Roman features (TR 15 NE 1946), medieval features (TR 15 NE 1947) and evidence for features associated post-medieval quarrying (TR 15 NE 1948).
The 19th century-early modern wall complex associated with HM Prison, Longport, Canterbury comprises brick walls which were located within the eastern end of the original exercise yard of the main prison block. The main group of brick structures were up to 1.92m wide and 0.40m in height. Modern drains and a sewer were also associated with these structure, however, as these are described as modern, they do not appear to be associated with the 19th century construction of the prison. No finds were associated with any of the features. (1)
