Full Description
The medieval wall at Canterbury Christ Church University, North Holmes Road Wall was excavated by Canterbury Archaeological Trust as part of an archaeological watching brief comprising repairs to the modern wall (constructed on top of the medieval wall).
The medieval wall "was represented by chalk and flint rubble bonded with orange-brown mortar.
The remains could have formed part of the original fourteenth-century boundary wall, although they were different to those observed previously during work associated with the insertion of dark fibre cabling in 2012. The remains revealed in 2012 were offset from the original wall, and more substantial. Those revealed during the current period of work perhaps instead represented a later, post-fourteenthcentury, rebuild" (from the original report). The original wall footings are described as standing to around 0.33m in height observed in the first of the two pits which were monitored in the watching brief. (1)
