Full Description
Several isolated Middle and later Bronze Age burials were discovered during investigations associated with the construction of the East Kent Access routeway in Thanet. these are in addition to those which were discovered in small cemeteries or with associated barrows. All of these were either urned or un urned cremations. Inhumations of a similar date have also been discovered during these excavations indicating that a variety of mortuary rites were being practiced at this location in mid to late Bronze Age
Towards the northern end of Zone 7 was an apparently isolated cremation burial which contained three small intrusive sherds of Iron Age pottery. The cremated bone from the feature produced a date of 1260-1010 cal BC placing it in the middle to late Bronze Age.
An isolated urned cremation burials was present within the eastern arm of Zone 11, placed in a small circular pit, with the rim of an inverted vessel sitting on the bottom of the cut. The base of the vessel had been truncated probably by ploughing, and it survived up to a height of 0.24m.
There were three Bronze Age unurned cremation burials in Zone 12. Bone from two gave a radio carbon dates of 1020-820 cal BC, placing both in the Late Bronze Age.
In zone 14 a small truncated pit containing an un Urned cremation burial produced a radio carbon date of 1420-1260 cal BC. Another (220025) burial was also discovered in zone 14, this was an urned cremation burial comprising a large (truncated) jar, base down in the pit, containing the bone of an infant.
