Full Description

Post-medieval walls at the South Precinct of Canterbury Cathedral were excavated during an archaeological evaluation at the site in 2016. Post-medieval features included floor deposits, a post-hole, and walls, including a 19th century boundary wall, and a wall visible on 18th and 19th century maps of the area. The boundary wall bordered properties on the South side of the South Precincts.
The floor deposit next to one of the walls is thought to relate to an outbuilding or short-lived structure during the post-medieval period.
One of the walls is thought to date from the 19th century but is not visible on contemporary maps, suggesting that it may relate to a short-lived structure or drain.
The yard surfaces contained fragments of Caen stone, brick, peg til, oyster shell, animal bone, and mortar lumps. The metalled surface was formed of flints. (1)
