Full Description
Possible medieval surfaces were excavated potentially associated with marking the principal entranceway into the medieval cathedral church. The surfaces associated with the South Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral were excavated as part of an archaeological evaluation comprising 8 evaluation pits.
Some of the possible medieval surfaces included deposits containing Reigate stone.
Finds associated with the surfaces/deposits include a copper alloy pin, several fragments of worked stone (with incised parallel lines), and a fragment of 13th-14th century pottery. (1)
During a later excavation and borehole survey at the site, a series of external surfaces and occupation deposits. The location of some surfaces suggested that they had been "laid to enhance the appearance of the principal entranceway into the Cathedral Church" (from the original report, 2). Some of the deposits and surfaces were thought to have resulted from episodes of construction, demolition, and renovation work at the site. (2)
