Full Description
Excavated in 2016, the Iron Age evidence from the site comprised a possible prehistoric soil horizon and several sherds of Iron Age pottery - two associated with the prehistoric deposit, the other as residual material in the infill of one of the later features.
The possible prehistoric soil deposit comprised a "0.20–0.24m thick deposit of mid brown, firm, silty
clay" (1), and was associated with finds including burnt flint (recovered through environmental sampling), and two fragments of middle Iron Age pottery. Other finds recovered through environmental sampling included charcoal, pot fragments, slag, hammerscale, burnt bone, shell, ceramic building material, clinker, and coal; however, these artefacts may have been introduced into the deposit through earthworm action due to the small quantities in which they were recorded.
A Bronze Age settlement is located around 300m NW of the site, and limited Iron Age activity has been recorded in the vicinity of the site in the form of two coins dating from 55 BC and 10-40 AD respectively, and Iron Age pottery fragments. (1)
