Full Description

?Roman road metallings or trample deposits were excavated on land to the rear of the Falstaff Hotel, Canterbury in 2017 during an archaeological evaluation of the site. These are thought to be associated with a Roman road or trackway in the area.

Evidence for Roman occupation is present in the surrounding area and the site is thought to be adjacent to the possible alignment of a major Roman road, suggesting that these metallings may be associated with this occupation activity. Also found at the site in a residual deposit was a fragment of human skull possibly dating from the Roman period (TR 15 NW 2605), suggesting that Roman inhumation burials may be present in the nearby area (1).
