Full Description

Reported from Whitstable: '18th November - 24 block tin pigs, or spelter, marked PM and two casks of oil landed today from the wreck on the Burrows.' '19th November - a further quantity of block tin, viz. 14 pigs landed here today, from the wreck on the Burrows.'(1) 'It has been known long since there was a wreck on the Girdler Sand, off Herne Bay, but no one took any notice of it, until this spring, when divers went down and examined and recovered some iron guns, of very ancient date, also some of those curious ingots and some iron, lead in pigs, and red lead in cast-iron casks, covered in wood. What quantity they recovered of the several articles no one knows but themselves. The operation was conducted under the orders of the Duke of Wellington, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, and the men had then recovered 2,700 ingots, together with some stone shot...the divers still at work...the wreck in four fathoms.'(2) Date of Loss Qualifier: R Additional sources cited in United Kingdom Shipwreck Index: LL.20.11.1835(R) (1); Proceedings of the Assoc. of Antiquarians 1835 (2)
