Full Description

Post-medieval features were excavated in 2016 at Canterbury Cathedral Welcome Centre. The features include walls, a drain, a brick tank, and another brick feature. Some of the features date from the early post-medieval period - 16th-17th century - whilst others appear to date from the 19th century.
The 16th-17th century features include walls thought to be associated with post-medieval shops, a property wall (the lower levels of the extant wall for the building in which pit 7 was located), and a drain.
The later features (mainly 19th century), include a vaulted brick tank, brickwork, yard surfaces, and a curved brick feature.
The vaulted brick tank is thought to have potentially have formed the tank for a water closet.
One of the yard surfaces was found to contain animal remains, tile, brick, and a copper alloy pin with globular heads. It is unclear when this yard surface dated from, however, it may be 19th century or earlier.
The brickwork may have formed a floor surface.
The curving brick feature may have formed the wall of an unidentified structure.
Medieval features were also excavated at the site (TR 15 NE 1975). (1)
