Full Description
A possible medieval structure was identified during excavations at the Great Cloister of Canterbury Cathedral in 2016. The structure was composed of mortar bonded flint, and stood to a height of 0.22m. The function of the structure is unclear, however, it may have been a pre-burial ground structure (suggesting a medieval date), or possibly have formed a grave surround (suggesting a later, possibly post-medieval, date).
Earlier archaeological evidence at the site comprised possible Roman or Anglo-Saxon layers and a clay floor (TR 15 NE 1978). Later archaeological remains included post-medieval burials (TR 15 NE 1980). (1)
