Full Description
17th-18th century burials excavated in 2016 at the Great Cloister of Canterbury Cathedral.
The burials were dated due to pottery found within the graves dating to the 17th-18th centuries. The burials may be those of "Huguenots who were granted permission to worship in the cathedral and to bury their dead in the cloister garth" (from the original report, 1).
The burials comprised three articulated burials and three possible burials/grave cuts. All features which could be determined to have an alignment appear to be aligned E-W. At least two of the burials were in supine position. Some remains were also recovered which were disarticulated.
At least two of the burials were those of adults; one of the adult burials was also determined to suffer from rickets due to the distortion of the lower legs in the burial.
Artefacts recovered from the grave fill included 17th-18th century pottery, medieval/post-medieval glazed floor tile, brick fragments, and tobacco pipe fragments.
Earlier archaeological evidence included Roman/Anglo-Saxon deposits and a clay floor (TR 15 NE 1978), and a possible medieval structure (TR 15 NE 1979). Overlying all of the archaeological features was a 1938 levelling deposit from when the garth was levelled and upright gravestones removed. (1)
