Full Description
Post-medieval walls, drains, and yard surfaces were excavated in 2016 at the Cathedral House Yard, Canterbury.
The drains comprised an earlier brick drain thought to be associated with taking water through the South Precincts, and a later sonte drain which fed into the earlier feature.
Yard surfaces and soils dating from the post-medieval period were also present at the site - thought to be associated with earlier phases of the Cathedral House Yard.
The post-medieval walls comprised a wall constructed of Caen stone, thought to be associated with features taking water thought the South Precincts, and brick walls thought to be associated with the construction of outbuildings or pens in the yard.
The features associated with facilitating the movement of water through the site may be related to a Conduit House known to exist in the vicinity of the yard during the post-medieval period.
Finds associated with the post-medieval features and layers include 16th-18th century pottery, animal bone, tobacco pipe fragments dating from the late 16th-17th centuries, brick and tile dating from the medieval/post-medieval period, and a small quantity of oyster shell. (1)
