Full Description
Medieval deposits and features were excavated at Shirley Hall, Canterbury. Features at the site included evidence for demolition of earlier Anglo-Saxon buildings during the Lanfranc period in the form of a rubble layer, surfaces (including a clay floor, and bedding for further floor surfaces) dating from the medieval period were also excavated at the site including 12th century horizons, and later medieval and post-Dissolution horizons. Several other features of unknown function dating from the medieval period were also excavated at the site. These included a post-hole potentially dating from around the 13th century.
Part of the external wall of the Archbishop's Great Kitchen (TR 15 NW 1699) (dating from around 1220 AD) was also identified at the site. The wall was constructed within a N-S cut over 1.6m in depth and 1.2m in width. This building was destroyed by fire in 1543 AD. A Dissolution horizon and contemporary boundary wall were also identified at the site.
Later features at the site included a large 19th century pit which is thought to relate to the yard of the Kent Fire Brigade's Engine House.
Finds associated with the features included a large number of sherds of medieval pottery dating between 1025-1350 and medieval roof tile (1).
