Full Description
Anglo-Saxon and medieval domestic and industrial material was excavated in 2021 at Cockering Farm, Canterbury.
Earlier activity at the site included Palaeolithic (TR 15 NW 2625), Mesolithic/Neolithic (TR 15 NW 2619, TR 15 NW 2620), Bronze Age (TR 15 NW 2621), and Iron Age (TR 15 NW 2622).
The Anglo-Saxon/medieval material included pottery fragments dating between 850-1220 AD (including potsherds dating between 850-1050 AD) which were associated with other material found within the same feature fills. The other material included horseshoe nails (medieval-post-medieval), animal bone, metalworking material and ironworking slag, fire-cracked flint, charred cereal grain (including barley, wheat, and rye), charcoal, shell, ceramic building material, and fired clay. It is unclear whether the pits and linear feature in which these materials were excavated also dated to this period. Due to this lack of clarity the finds have been recorded as a findspot rather than including the features as a monument record (1).
