Full Description

Pleistocene deposits and a palaeochannel were identified at Mitchinson's House, Canterbury in 2016. The Pleistocene deposits comprised pale clay silt with chalk clasts and either represented in situ cryoturbated chalk or late Pleistocene head material - coombe deposits - with a suggested date of 25,000-350,000yrs BP (before the present day). This deposit was overlain by deposits from the palaeochannel (discussed below), which was in turn ovelain by inorganic clay silts representing late Pleistocene/early Holocene fluvio-lacustrine deposits. No artefacts were recovered.

One or more palaeochannel(s) were identified at the site during a watching brief on geotechnical work. A surface of 2-4m compact sandy fluvial gravels was identified in a number of the boreholes. "This surface may represent a single palaeochannel running roughly west to east cross the site but more probably results from two, not necessarily contemporary, channels running south to north, suggesting (as seems to be the case elsewhere) a braided river system at the close of the First Terrace's formation" (dated broadly between 25,000-350,000 yrs BP) (from the original report, 1).
