Full Description

A post-medieval quarry pit was excavated in 1999 at 40-42 Station Road West, Canterbury, during an archaeological evaluation. The quarry pit was identified through its fills which dated from the late 18th-early 19th century and contained oyster shells and carbon. The fill was identified in one quarry pit at a depth of 0.25m and in the other at a depth of 0.60m. Although the date of the quarry pit is unknown, it is likely that it may date from a similar period as the 18th-19th century fill within it. The quarry was likely used for the excavation of brickearth clay soils - for the manufacture of pottery, brick and tile in the nearby area. (1)
