Full Description

Two trenches excavated in advance of proposed development in 2001 recorded medieval and post-medieval features. Medieval features included a refuse pit, and clay floor associated with a built structure on the site, alongside a mortar floor which has been interpreted as late medieval in date. These deposits may be related to two buildings seen on a 1572 map of the city. The later demolition of these buildings is evidenced by deposits of crushed mortar, peg tile, and brick; the area in which the buildings stood appears as open land (possibly used as allotments) in 16th-17th century maps.
Later occupation at the site dates from the post-medieval period with the construction of residential dwellings at the site (TR 15 NW 1401). (1)
