Full Description
[TQ 68265767] The south range is incorporated into a mid-18th c. house. The north wall of this house is placed upon the arcade of the cloister which was rebuilt in the early 13th c. The southern side of the house is entirely mid-18th c. and contains much reused material. (1) The cloister arcade has been blocked-up and small windows have been inserted here and there. In the reconstructed upper part of the north wall, several 13th/14th c. windows have been inserted. There is a 13th c. doorway at either end. The drainheads are dated 1754 and 1808. the remainder of the building is of the 18th c. GP AO/59/58/8 South Range. Arcade from north-west. (2) Malling Abbey, West Tower and site of Abbey Church. The East (TQ 65 NE 47) and South Ranges (the 18th century house) are the living quarter of the sisters. (3) According to Hasted, the 18th century house was built by Frazer Honeywood, who bought the estate in 1740 and died in 1764. He used medieval windows from the ruined abbey in his new residence. (4)
