Full Description
A medieval and a post-medieval road surface was excavated in 2003 at St George's Street, Canterbury. The road surfaces were identified in three of four excavation pits. In one, the road surface comprised flint and gravel overlying a levelling layer formed of compacted chalk. The gravel road was identified in two more of the pits, however, one of the surfaces contained probable post-medieval crushed brick, suggesting that this may have been a later layer of road surface than those uncovered in the other pits which were thought to be medieval in date. St George's Street has been one of the main E-W roads in the area since the 10th century, suggesting that the road surfaces uncovered during this excavation relate to later phases of this road. (1)
