Full Description

A late medieval/post-medieval gravel quarry was excavated at 1 Hollow Lane, Canterbury between 2002-2004. All of the evalaution trenches sat within a large feature in excess of 10m wide. The presence of this feature was indicated by the slumping of deposits and the presence of redeposited River Gravel, leading to interpretations that the feature represented a gravel/clay quarry. It is unclear what period the quarry originated in, however, it is thought to have been first dug after the formation of Hollow Lane during the medieval period, placing the origination date of the quarry at late medieval or post-medieval. Gravel quarrying is known in the site vicinity during the 19th century, and the presence of a 19th century pot in one of the deposits suggests that the feature was still extant, althought partially backfilled during this period. Finds associated with the layers infillings the quarry include coal, peg-tile, and pottery. (1)
