Full Description
Medieval metallings were excavated in 2000 at Luxmoore House, Canterbury. Two layers of metallings were excavated, one formed from a compact surface of medium sized pebbles and flint fragments, with pea-grit on the surface, and the other layer formed from flint and peg-tile fragments with pea grit on the surface. These layers were sealed by a general context layer containing a piece of Clowes Wood decorated floor tile dating to 1175-1225 AD, alongisde 14th-15th century Tyler Hill Ware, and later post-medieval and 19th-20th century flower pot (possibly intrusive). The metalled surfaces are suggested to be associated with land plots fronting the lane at Queningate during the 13th century, with the layer above suggested to represent garden soil associated with Convent Garden Wall construction after 1400 AD.
