Full Description
An undated gully containing in its fill a poorly preserved disarticulated human femur, and undated post-hole were excavated on land at Hollow Lane, Canterbury. The gully measured 1.5m+ x 0.67 x 0.18m; within its fill were 6 fragments of the proximal right shaft of a human femur, probably belonging to a female, or older juvenile individual. The post hole measured 0.45x0.32x0.05m. No dating evidence was recovered from either feature.
Later features excavated at the site included post medieval post-holes (probably fence posts), and a post-medieval midden, suggesting the primary function of this area of land was agricultural.
Other (unrelated) artefacts discovered at the site include unstratified finds of an abraded sherd of prehistoric pottery and a piece of struck flint, ?post-medieval ceramic building material, clay tobacco pipe, animal remains, shell, an iron artefact, and glass, alongside a single residual sherd of 13th-mid 14th century Tyler Hill Ware, and 1800-1840 AD pottery.
