Full Description
An undated post-hole and Roman quarry pit were excavated at 3 Queens Avenue, Canterbury during an evaluation in 2017.
The post-hole measured 0.13m in diameter, and 0.12m in depth. The quarry pit measured over 6m in extent and over 0.63m in depth - it was deeper and wider than the extent of the excavation trench therefore it is full extent is unclear. The quarry pit contained red-orange scorched daub, and a large quantity of Roman tile fragments, largely comprising roof tiles (tegulae and imbrices). The feature has been interpreted as a Roman brickearth quarry, used to supply a local kiln and tile manufacturing site. Waste tiles which were fragmented or distorted in appearance were then deposited in the pit presumably after it went out of use.
Roman period burials are known from the surrounding area, therefore this site has been identified as an extra-mural industrial site dating from this period. (1)
