Full Description

A post-medieval quarry was excavated on land at the Royal Oak Public House, 114 Sweechgate, Canterbury in May 2017. The site functioned as a farmstead during the post-medieval period. The quarry measured 5m in width, containing a fill of tile and charcoal; the feature was not fully excavated. It may have been used for sand, clay, or gravel extraction.
Other post-medieval features including walls, an agricultural soil layer, a linear feature, a refuse pit, and animal burials, were excavated in the vicinity of the quarry.
One of the walls was aligned N-S and may have been associated with a 19th century ancillary structure; the other wall as aligned E-W and is thought to be related to additional farm buildings at the site.
The refuse pit contained peg-tile within its fill.
The linear feature was aligned NE-SW and measured 0.4m in width and 0.2m in depth and contained charcoal and tile within its fill. This feature is thought to have formed part of a farmyard boundary.
The animal burials comprised a small dog and a pig. (1)
