Full Description

A post-medieval rubbish pit was excavated on land to the rear of 46 Stour Street, Canterbury, during an evaluation in 2017. The rubbish pit was potentially associated with a Tannery in the vicinity of the site. The pit's full extent could not be determined, it was present in the evaluation in the form of two deposits representing pit fills. Contained within the fills were a range of artefacts including fragments of brick, peg-tile, oyster shell, animal bone, tobacco clay pipe, and brown glazed pottery.
St Mildred's Tannery, which the pit may have been associated with, is located SW of the site. The site of the Tannery may have been used for tanning since the Roman period; the site was in use until 2001.
The pit may also have been associated with the construction of a nearby property built in the 1800s. (1)
