Full Description
A late Neolithic - late Bronze Age linear feature, possibly representing a boundary ditch or hollow way, was excavated during an evaluation at Cranmer Ward, St Martin's Hospital, Canterbury in 2014. The feature ran across and beyond the trench it was excavated in; it measured 4.50m in width and survived to a depth of 0.62m, with a U-shaped profile and flat wide base. The feature contained within its fill rare charcoal flecks, a blade-like worked flint flake dating between the Mesolithic and Bronze Age periods, and a sherd of flint-tempered pottery dating to around the late Bronze Age/early Iron Age. Another fill deposit contained a fragment of Roman pottery and possibly modern brick, however, these are thought to be residual in character.
The presence of agricultual/horticultural soils at the site suggested that it may have been associated with farming during the post-medieval periods. (1)
