Full Description
A post-medieval quarry was excavated on land off Farleigh Road, Canterbury, during an evaluation in 2004. Two of the brick earth pits were rectangular in form. Of the pits with recorded extents and alignments the majority appear to have been aligned NW-SE and measured between 2.5-3.75m in length and 1-1.10m width (although the majority appear to extend beyond the edges of the trenches. The only artefacts recovered from the fill of the quarry pits were residual Roman artefacts including pottery (TR 15 NE 2026), and kiln debris from a kiln potentially associated with the quarry.
The quarrying at the site took the form of hand spit digging dating to the earlier part of the 19th century or before. This form of quarrying may have resulted in labourers being paid regarding the amount of brickearth they had extracted. The absence of quarrying features in one of the trenches has led to the suggestion within the report that open area extraction occurred at the site after the mid 19th century due to the introduction of the steam shovel.
Other features at the site including a post-hole and other pits and linear features are thought to be broadly contemporary with the quarry pit digging, however, their relationship is unclear. (1)
